Daisy is pively confronting Tom's lack of romanticism evidenced in his blatant infidelity. The mood is a melancholy one, with a silent understanding of Tom's behavior between Tom and Daisy. I never read too much into the birds, I always just took them as an observation, though I suppose they could be ociated with happiness and freedom from the vapid lives of Tom and Daisy. One thing I love about this book is that the reader can come to many different interpretations depending on where the reader's sympathies lie.
